Overview
Doja Cat Hates Her Fans Controversy or Doja Cat Hating Fans refers to a series of controversial events in which American singer Doja Cat has perceivably mistreated or antagonized her fanbase on social media, particularly around mid-2023. In July 2023, the singer said on Threads that she didn't love her admirers, leaving some of her biggest fans heartbroken and furious. After that, memes and photoshopped images of Doja hating her fandom spawned across multiple social platforms, resulting in widespread discourse and media coverage online.
Background
On May 9th, 2023, American rapper Doja Cat admitted on Twitter[1] that her previous albums, Planet Her and Hot Pink, were just "cash grabs." The post has since been deleted but a screenshot (shown below) was posted by user @gothamhiphop, which garnered over 4,000 likes and 342 retweets in just a few hours.
A few months later, on July 21st, 2023, Twitter user @fivestarportals criticized Doja Cat's rumored relationship with J Cyrus, accusing the comedian of being an alleged "abuser, manipulator, predator and a cheater." The tweet has since been deleted, but a screenshot posted by user @river_is_nice[2] shows the post (seen below) garnered over 58,000 likes and 6,200 retweets in three days.
Developments
Doja Cat Blocks Fans For Calling Her Out
After the tweet accusing her purported boyfriend went viral in late July 2023, the rapper started to block her fans commenting on her relationship on any social platform. For instance, on July 21st, 2023, the Twitter gossip page @QGdoPOP[3] showed an interaction between the singer and a fan on Instagram in which Doja argues with a fan and later blocks her on Twitter. The post (shown below) garnered over 11,400 likes and 3,600 retweets in three days.
Doja Cat Says She Doesn't Love Her Fans
On July 23rd, 2023, the singer then responded to a fan on Threads asking if she can say she loves them. Doja responded with, "I don't though cuz I don't even know yall." The interaction was shared on Twitter[4] by @PopBase (shown below), which received roughly 177,000 likes and 48,000 retweets in a day.
Online Reactions
Online, several fans have raised complaints against the singer's attitude towards them throughout July 2023. For instance, Twitter[5] user @audenmcbeath posted a picture on July 24th, 2023, that represents how Doja Cat feels when her "fans love and support her." The post (shown below, left) garnered roughly 310 likes and 15 retweets in a few hours. Also that day, Twitter[6] user @Mishkahatesyou posted a Fernanfloo Dresses Up meme to express her reaction about the rapper's perceived downfall. The post (shown below, right) garnered over 4,400 likes and 420 retweets in a day.
Doja Cat Criticizes Her "Kittenz" Fanbase
In the same Threads interaction in which the rapper says she doesn't like her fans, she also mocked her own online fanbase over calling themselves "Kittenz." As a result of her statement, several fan pages dedicated to the rapper deactivated their accounts on Twitter. The Twitter account PopCrave[7] shared screenshots of some of the deactivated pages on July 23rd, 2023 (shown below), which received over 138,000 likes and 6,000 retweets in a day.
