Overview
Ethan Klein vs. K-Pop Fans refer to an ongoing online fight between Ethan Klein of h3h3productions and fans of K-Pop after Klein made disparaging remarks about the genre and its fans. This led to a surge of K-Pop fans tweeting criticism of Klein using the hashtag #h3h3isoverparty while fans of Klein claimed they were overreacting and sided with the YouTuber.
Background
On December 8th, 2019, Ethan Klein discussed the 2019 YouTube Rewind on his podcast. Upon seeing BTS mentioned in the video, he remarked:
I don’t like K-pop, I hate K-pop, I don’t get BTS. They look like they’re just a bunch of – how did this become a thing in Western culture where all these grown men and little girls are jerking off to little K-pop boys? It’s like a little fetish. A little twink gay fetish about these K-pop boys.
Developments
The comments swiftly led to anger from the K-Pop fanbase on Twitter, who started the hashtag #h3h3isoverparty to counter Klein's description of K-Pop fans. User @lovefojjk[1] tweeted the clip and wrote, "there’s a difference between having an opinion and being a total asshole. if he had simply said “kpop just isn’t my thing” I would brush it off. but being a straight up fuckwit & talking about minors in that way does not get a pass from me #h3h3isoverparty" (shown below, left). User @soonieknow wrote, "#h3h3isoverparty is not trending cuz we’re mad he doesn’t like kpop, it’s because he said homophobic and xenophobic things about kpop and about young girls masturbating. sounds a bit gross to me"[2] (shown below, right).
Klein[3] responded by saying "That face when K-pop stans are trying to take the moral high ground over a joke… but are responsible for dozens of suicides of K-pop idols because of their online abuse," referring to two recent suicides of K-Pop idols. Keemstar joined in by tweeting the hashtag #BanKPopAccounts,[4] as some K-Pop fan accounts have a habit of spamming praise for their favorite idols in unrelated threads (shown below, right).
The hashtag war led to a question on /r/OutOfTheLoop about the drama, gaining over 2,700 points.[5]
