Overview

Meta Connect 2021 refers to a Facebook live press promotion that took place on YouTube and Facebook on October 28th, 2021. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced during it the company's name change to Meta, as well as the announcement of their virtual reality campaign, run through Oculus Rift, called the "Metaverse." Memes stemming from the event used footage from the virtual reality segment of the broadcast predominantly.

Background

The event was broadcasted live on October 28th, 2021, on platforms like YouTube,[1] where during the event, Zuckerberg announced multiple developments in the company's strategy going forward. Many of the announcements revolved around Meta's new virtual reality feature called Quest which would effectively be the new name of Oculus which Facebook acquired back in 2014.[2] This virtual reality sector of Meta's brand would help build their proposed "Metaverse," also announced during Meta Connect. Zuckerberg made it clear that the Metaverse is targeted as, "the successor to the mobile internet," suggesting that it's part of the company's attempt to keep up with Web3 developments. At the end of the broadcast, Zuckerberg also announced the company's name change to Meta.

The full-length broadcast can be viewed via a YouTube[1] video (shown below) posted by Meta's YouTube channel. Over the course of two months, it received roughly 4.6 million views.

After the event broadcasted, memes using video snippets from it were used on platforms like TikTok. For instance, on October 30th, 2021, TikTok[3] account @memes posted a video exploiting a moment during the broadcast where Zuckerberg is choosing his avatar's outfit. The TikTok (shown below) referenced VRChat and Ugandan Knuckles and received roughly 1 million plays and 149,100 likes after being posted.

More memes appeared on TikTok[4] in the days following. Video memes using the same clip from the example above also referenced GTA II, which was also announced during Meta Connect to being currently developed for Oculus Quest 2. The TikTok[5] (shown below) received roughly 1.1 million plays and 160,300 likes after being posted on November 8th, 2021.
