Related Explainer: Does Twitch Streamer Ninja Really Have Cancer? Ninja's Melanoma Diagnosis And Announcement Explained

Overview

Ninja’s Skin Cancer Diagnosis refers to the American Twitch streamer Ninja’s (real name Tyler Blevins) March 2024 diagnosis with melanoma, which he said was discovered during a routine skin cancer screening. Online, fans of Ninja shared their support and wished him a speedy recovery while he awaited news of additional melanoma screening results, which will confirm whether his cancer has been fully removed or if he will need additional treatment. The news was widely covered in the media, as well as discussed on social media.

Background

On March 26th, 2024, Ninja posted on his Twitter / X[1] (using his account @Ninja) announcing the news of his diagnosis. He explained that during an annual skin cancer screening scheduled by his wife, a dermatologist removed a suspicious mole from his foot due to an abundance of caution. The mole turned out to be early-stage melanoma, better known as skin cancer. Ninja stated at the time that he was currently being tested for an additional area of possible melanoma nearby. Ninja added that he was “grateful to have hope in finding this early,” and told fans to “take this as a PSA to get skin checkups.” His post (seen below) earned over 60,000 likes and 2,600 reposts in under a day.

Ninja @Ninja Subscribe Alright I'm still in a bit of shock but want to keep you all updated. A few weeks ago I went in to a dermatologist for an annual skin/mole check that Jess proactively scheduled for me. There was a mole on the bottom of my foot that they wanted to remove just to be careful. It came back as melanoma, but they are optimistic that we caught it in the early stages. I had another dark spot appear near it, so today they biopsied that and removed a larger area around the melanoma with the hopes that under the microscope they will see clear non-melanoma edges and we will know we got it. I'm grateful to have hope in finding this early, but please take this as a PSA to get skin checkups. 5:44 PM Mar 26, 2024 4.5M Views 2.1K 2.6K 60K 1.3K <]

Three hours later on March 26th, Ninja's wife Jessica Blevins quote posted Ninja's announcement on her X[2] account @JessicaBlevins, adding, "Crazy butterfly effect moment-I probably wouldn’t have started scheduling annual skin checkups yet if we didn’t move to Florida. Foot melanoma is not sun-related, so it would have been there anyways and we might not have found it. Thank God 🙏🏼," earning 490 likes and seven reposts in under a day (seen below).

On TikTok, numerous users shared their concern for Ninja. For instance, TikToker @syinite shared sincere worry about Ninja in a March 26th TikTok[7] that earned 3.6 million views and 343,300 likes in under a day (seen below, left). Ninja's fictional disease "ligma" was also referenced numerous times, like in a March 26th TikTok[8] by @patrick_shepherd, which earned 90,000 views and 925 likes in under a day (seen below, right).

Developments

While it is possible that Ninja's cancer was fully removed when the mole was cut off for examination, it's also likely that the cancer has spread to the surrounding skin, which would be much more dangerous.[9] Melanoma is a serious but highly treatable form of skin cancer.

As of March 27th, 2024, Ninja is still waiting to hear back on whether or not the additional skin biopsies test positive for melanoma or another type of skin cancer, which would confirm the cancer's spread.[1]
