Overview

/r/me_irl's Post 2012 Memes Day is a mock holiday that was celebrated on the /r/me_irl subreddit on June 11th, 2018. During observance, Redditors shared classic memes from the year 2012 or memes from the era remixed in modern contexts.

Background

On June 5th, 2018, Redditor[1] e_phemeral posted an image in the /r/me_irl subreddit, declaring June 11th, 2018 would be 2012 meme day. They wrote, "everyone only post pre-2012 memes on june 11th so anybody who doesn't see this image thinks /r/me_irl has reverted to prehistoric memes." The post (shown below) received more than 28,000 points (93% upvoted) and 1,000 comments.

Developments

On June 11th, Redditors on /r/me_irl began posting images that were popular in the year 2012. Redditor[3] spacedoutdad posted a Picard Facepalm meme with the caption "When somoene posts a meme that isn't from 2012." The post (shown below, left) received more than 12,000 points (85% upvoted) and 75 comments. Redditor[4] idontremembermylogi_ posted a Bad Luck Brian meme with the caption "Only Facebook Friend Is Mom Cyberbullied." The post (shown below, center) received more than 1,200 points (97% upvoted).

That day, Redditor[2] Stack_Man asked the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit, "Why is r/me_irl filled with old memes?" They wrote, "Currently, r/me_irl is ravaged by many memes from years ago and I'm not sure why. There are plenty on the front page, but here are some examples." The post received more than 2,400 points (90% upvoted) and 95 comments in 24 hours.

The following day, Redditor[5] Slivina posted a an image of an animated janitor cleaning trash. The post (shown below) received more than 17,000 points (95% upvoted) and 110 comments in 24 hours.
