The Game Awards 2016 was an awards ceremony that honored the best video games of the year and took place in Los Angeles on December 1st, 2016.^[3]

The nominees for the ceremony were announced on November 23rd, 2016.^[4] There were dozens of categories, including Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Independent Game, and many more.

Developments

At the ceremony, Overwatch won game of the year, beating Doom, Inside, Uncharted 4, and Titanfall 2. Other winners included Inside for best independent game, Dishonored 2 for best action/adventure, and Pokemon GO for best family game and best mobile/handheld game.

Death Stranding Trailer

At the ceremony, Hideo Kojima excited his fans by revealing the first trailer for his upcoming horror game, Death Stranding.

Schick Hydrobot

The Schick Hydrobot is a mascot advertising for Schick Razor Blades, who were sponsoring the event. The Hydrobot appeared at The Game Awards and was viewed as a cringeworthy feature for the show.

The Schick Hydrobot had a negative reaction when The Game Awards aired as various media outlets including Rolling Stone^[1] and Forbes^[2] described it and skits surrounding it as the worst part of the show. A picture of Hideo Kojima with the Schick Hydrobot during the post-awards coverage was also shown as some noted the awkwardness of the two being together.

Game Of The Year

The 2016 Game Of The Year Award went to the Blizzard MMO Action Game, Overwatch. Overwatch beat out Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Inside, the DOOM reboot, and Titanfall 2 in order to win the award. The reaction to Overwatch winning was mixed to negative since some gamers argue that a multiplayer only based game like Overwatch should not have won due to the gameplay having one mode.
