About
Every Pokémon Is Someone's Favorite is an internet axiom that asserts every one of the 1,000-plus Pokémon in the Pokémon franchise is at least one person's personal favorite. The axiom has been tested in several informal polls over the years, some of which have discovered Pokémon that no one claimed to be their favorite. Others have challenged the axiom by asking if some ostensibly unremarkable Pokémon are anyone's favorite.
Origin
It's unclear where the axiom "Every Pokémon Is Someone's Favorite" originated. On June 24th, 2018, Redditor StarGazer96 said they had read the axiom in a prior post, and asked the /r/pokemon[2] subreddit if anyone's favorite Pokémon was Bruxish. On November 22nd, 2018, Resetera[1] user Castform remarked, "The amazing thing about Pokemon is that every Pokemon is someone's favorite."
The axiom was first tested on June 13th, 2019, when Redditor mamamia1001 created a survey for /r/pokemon visitors to select their favorite Pokémon.[3] In total, 52,000 people responded to the survey, and four Pokémon received zero votes: Silcoon, Gothita, Eelektrik and Yungoos.[4]
Spread
The axiom was tested and joked about through the latter 2010s and early 2020s. On November 1st, 2020, Redditor choco-bibi posted a thread to /r/pokemon[5] challenging users to name a Pokémon they think is nobody's favorite and see if someone responded claiming that it was indeed their favorite. Most suggested Pokémon, like Binacle, Burmy and Maractus, received affirmative responses. Others made arguments for the zero-vote Pokémon from the 2019 poll.
On Twitter, several users joked about the axiom by posting pictures of largely disliked or mostly forgettable Pokémon. On September 29th, 2019, user @ghoulrunnings[6] joked, "that fucks me up bc someones favorite pokemon is actually bruxish," gaining over 30 retweets and 580 likes in roughly four years (shown below, left). On February 3rd, 2023, ProZD posted a picture of Tranquill and argued that it was impossible for it to be anyone's favorite Pokémon, gaining over 130 retweets and 7,000 likes in two weeks[7] (shown below, right).
