About

Favorite Pasta Recipe / Shampoo and Conditioner are slang phrases based on a 2015 poem by Hannah Dains referencing suicide. The phrases "I shared my favorite pasta recipe" and "I finished my shampoo and conditioner at the same time" were used in TikTok videos starting in June 2020 to signify that they were planning to kill themself.

Origin

On December 9th, 2015, All Def Poetry uploaded a Youtube video of Hannah Dains reciting her poem "Don't Kill Yourself Today" (shown below). The video gained over 819,00 views in five years. One section of the poem reads "don't kill yourself until you finish your shampoo and conditioner at the same time […] don't kill yourself until you tell someone your best pasta recipe."

Spread

On June 12th, TikTokers began referencing the poem in videos where they explain that they either just shared their favorite pasta recipe or ran out of both shampoo and conditioner. TikTokers annabell.michie and knockoffcrackbarbie posted videos of themselves with captions referencing the poem suggesting that they are suicidal (shown below, left). The videos accumulated over 906,100 likes and 183,800 likes in a month. On Jne 16th, TikToker cleanpenis uploaded another video using the phrases in reference to her mental health (shown below, right). On June 22nd, one Redditor asked about the trend in an r/outoftheloop[1] post. The NY Post[2] and StayHipp[3] also wrote articles about the trend.
