Gender Is What's In Your Pants is a catchphrase and phrasal template used in various memes that acts as a continuation of the text manipulation meme "What's In Your Pants?" While the original post was meant as an earnest attempt to identify the gender of an individual, the meme setup continues with the joke in a more absurdist and humorous style by explaining that the person's gender is a literal thing that is found in their pants.

Origin

On January 19th, 2015, Tumblr user meowvgonsplenger^[1] uploaded the first-known instance of the precursor phrase, a Steven Universe meme in which the punchline is the question "what's between your legs?" with the answer being "shorts" (shown below).

Five years later, on October 11th, 2020, a now-deleted Redditor uploaded the first example of the evolution to the meme, using a picture^[2] of Hatsune Miku and using the Bitches Be Like meme format to state that their gender is "piss" (shown below).

Spread

On January 22nd, 2021, Redditor u/samthememe777^[3] uploaded a variation of a Skeleton Pointing Gun meme, with the phrase being refined from the Miku meme by condensing the setup down to "oh so gender is what's in your pants?" with the punchline being in the bottom text. This revamped version would net over 2,600 upvotes in two years on the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit (shown below).

The phrase would continue to experience slight variations over the year, with Redditor u/Revolutionary-Ad8697^[4] uploading it in a different format on a Minion meme. In the post, which showed a Minion looking jacked similar to Buffsuki, the punchline is changed to say that the Minion's gender would be a "Glock 18" and "2 bags of cocaine," earning over 1,300 upvotes in two years (shown below).
