About
Get a Job, N---er is a reaction image of a blonde white man scowling down at a Black person and saying, "Get a job, n***er." The image originates from the 2016 SvenStoffels animation White Washed, which is based on a joke told on the Legion of Skanks podcast. The image was popularized as a no-context reaction meme starting as early as 2022, in which the quote attributed to the image is often left out, leaving it up to the viewer of the meme to recall the joke. The meme is often used to tell someone online, regardless of race, to get a job, essentially acting as an alternate way to tell someone to touch grass.
Origin
On November 16th, 2016, Newgrounds[1] user SvenStoffels posted an animation set to the audio of a joke told on the Legion of Skanks podcast.
The premise of the joke is that two Black men, one with 98 cents and one with a dollar, come across a store that can make them white for 99 cents. The man with the dollar plans to go in, become white, then give his friend the leftover cent to turn white, too. When the first man comes out, now white, his friend asks him for the penny, and he says, "Get a job n***er." The animation garnered over 11,000 views in nine years.
The animation was reuploaded elsewhere online numerous times over the following years, including by YouTuber[2] Razorshady1711 on November 21st, 2016, garnering over 450,000 views in nine years.
The earliest known use of the man saying, "Get a job n***er," as a reaction image is a GIF posted by X[3] user @fujitheprod on October 22nd, 2022, in response to a post asking which of four anime characters' feet you would lick, garnering just two likes in three years.
Spread
The meme continued to spread as a reaction image over the following years, starting to see significant traction in late 2024 and throughout 2025.
On December 7th, 2024, X[4] user @Qwerty_Soda posted the meme in response to a tweet reading, "you just won $50 million and your lifelong friend says 'we’re rich' what do you say back?" garnering over 29,000 likes in seven months. A screenshot of the interaction was posted to iFunny[5] the next day, garnering over 1,400 smiles in the same span of time.
On March 30th, 2025, X[6] user @TwilightNK posted the image in response to another X user begging them for money for some Papa John's pizza, garnering over 5,100 likes in four months.
On April 4th, X[7] user @vinxmana posted a version of the meme in which the man has been edited to resemble the Captain America Hellfire Gala skin in Marvel Rivals, garnering over 2,600 likes in three months.
On April 8th, 2025, X[8] user @MoriCaliopeFeet posted the reaction image in response to a post quoting Nintendo of America CEO Doug Bowser as saying, "We recognize there are some people that may not be able to afford the Switch 2’s price point. That’s why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available," garnering over 6,400 likes in three months.
