About

Girls Dancing Funk / Cia Fissura meme refers to a 2012 viral video of Brazilian teenagers doing a choreographed funk dance, which was turned into a copypasta meme in which people use different songs to match the dance moves.

Origin

Six at-the-time teenagers gathered, 10 years ago (February 6th, 2012) at a house in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, to rehearse a funk choreography for the song ‘Te Arrebento’ by Mc Letícia.

The girl group, named Cia Fissura[1], uploaded the rehearsal video on YouTube in 2012. Three years later, in 2015, the video went viral on Facebook and Instagram after someone noticed the dance video could be synced with almost any song. For example, a video posted on Facebook on November 21st, 2016, uses the teenagers dancing with the Mortal Kombat 90’s movie theme song “Techno Syndrome” and recceived almost 200 views over a few years.[2]

A Facebook page was created on November 18th, 2016, with the name “Every day a new video of the girls from Cia Fissura dancing to a new song”[3]. 10 Year Anniversary Of The Viral Video

A viral Twitter thread (seen below) from August 8th, 2022 revealed that the original YouTube video for the meme had been uploaded by the girls' group exactly ten years ago. The thread received almost 50,000 likes in four days. @BHeMeupais[6] explained the story behind the meme, saying the teenagers “always did these rehearsals to perform at night, at shows and festivals, on weekends. Many, like this one, were registered and posted on the group's YouTube channel.”
