About

Groyd is an offshoot of Pepe the Frog based on George Floyd that originated in May of 2021 on 4chan's /pol/ board. Various illustrations have been made of Groyd, often with a parasitic cyclops frog, known as Ni, mind controlling him.

Origin

Groyd first originated on May 6th, 2021, on 4chan's /pol/ board. The first thread was titled "What did Kek mean by this?" and showed the George Floyd mural in Salt Lake City, Utah flipped upside to reveal a hidden Pepe-style frog and amogus (shown below).^[1] This thread would reach nearly 300 replies, and another was made later in the day. The next thread was titled "Let's make George Floyd a white supremacy symbol" and got over 300 replies, with many people showing the frogs they were able to find in George Floyd's face.^[2]

Later, posters in the threads also noticed that there is another frog like shape on top of the upside down George Floyd mural. This frog was drawn as having only one eye and standing on Groyd's head. A thread (shown below) was created stating that trips will decide the name for this smaller frog, and the name was decided to be "Pepe 2".^[3] The same poster who came up with Pepe 2 later said that the frog should be called "Ni", but other posters pointed out that Ni means two in Japanese. Ni is portrayed as being a higher being than Groyd who possesses him to commit crimes and create chaos.^[6]

The first few threads about Groyd were popular, nearing or passing bump limit. Several threads were made afterwards dedicated to making edits of Groyd.^[4][5] Some of those edits have caught on and are ocassionaly posted on boards such as /pol/ and /biz/ where frogposting is popular.
