About

Gunna's "Top Off" refers to a hip-hop song by rapper Gunna that became notable in TikTok videos in 2022, wherein, creators parodied Gunna singing into a hanging microphone by instead singing into inanimate objects such as chicken sandwiches, fast food items and charging cords, among others. The trend is parodying a collaboration video Gunna did with Adidas in 2018 called "COLORS," originally uploaded to YouTube.

Origin

On October 1st, 2018, a video of Gunna performing the song "Top Off" was uploaded to YouTube as a part of a collaboration with Adidas Football called "A COLORS SHOW." In the video, Gunna is standing in an all-grey room and rapping into a microphone hanging from the ceiling. Over the course of four years, the video received roughly 25.7 million views (shown below).

Three years later, on March 25th, 2021, TikToker[1] lalamaria_ posted a video, originally posted to Snapchat, that showed the "hood version of COLORS," wherein, she's rapping into a half-eaten McDonald's sandwich and pretending that it's the microphone. Over the course of 15 months, the video received roughly 1.7 million plays and 368,400 likes (shown below).

Spread

Roughly one year later, in June 2022, lalamaria_'s video started to be recreated by other TikTokers, most likely in regards to Gunna and Young Thug's developing RICO charges and arrests. On June 3rd, 2022, TikToker[2] killy066 posted a video of herself parodying Gunna's rap with an upside-down soda bottle, earning roughly 67,300 plays and 8,400 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). Inspired by her video, more creators hopped onto the trend. For instance, on June 7th, 2022, TikToker[3] not.meluvcarti posted a new iteration showing one of her friends sitting on the shoulders of another friend and holding a phone on a string to represent the microphone. The TikTok received roughly 213,500 plays and 36,600 likes in two weeks (shown below, right).

As the trend continued in June 2022, the objects that represented the microphone became increasingly absurd. For instance, on June 13th, 2022, TikToker[4] annbandz posted a video showing her friends crowding around her with their phone flashlights while she's singing into a chicken tender, earning roughly 872,400 plays and 163,000 likes in nine days (shown below, left). On June 21st, 2022, TikToker[5] 2innocents performed a parody using a fast food chicken sandwich, earning roughly 4.1 million plays and 970,900 likes in one day (shown below, right).
