About

Gym Bro Eating Dog Food is a viral video of fitness TikToker @Henry.Fit trying to eat dog food because of how much protein is in it. The video was uploaded in March 2023 and gained viral spread online shortly after, inspiring reactions, memes and reminders that humans should not eat dog food. Henry later tried cat food and found it similarly inedible.

Origin

In mid-February 2023, TikToker @kizaru.adm posted a now-deleted video in which he says, "Never Google how much protein is in dog food, you'll find yourself tempted." The video was duetted and stitched by numerous TikTokers[1][2] over the following days as people Googled it and showed the results, some seemingly eating dog food, with TikToker @nickrosenski suggesting dog food is the "cheapest protein per-pound" (examples shown below, left and right).

On February 20th, TikToker[3] @henry.fit then posted a video responding to @kizaru.adm's post claiming he would try eating dog food if he got 15,000 likes. The video gained over 21 million views and 2.5 million likes in a month. Later that day, he uploaded a video to TikTok[4] in which he attempts to eat a bowl of dog food but can't stomach it, gagging as he eats it, garnering over 2.8 million views in a month (shown below).

Spread

On February 21st, 2023, TikToker[5] @henry.fit posted a video in which he discovers that cat food has even higher amounts of protein than dog food and proceeds to try to eat it, also gagging throughout, garnering over 700,000 views in a month (shown below).

On March 16th, BuzzFeed[6] then reported on the video. In its article, the writer speaks to a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Melissa Majumdar, who claims dog food does not fall under the same safety regulations as human food. She claims that dog food can contain things like bone meal, organs, lungs and udders. She also says that even if dog food is labeled "human grade," it still shouldn't be eaten by humans.

Daily Mail[7] and the New York Post[8] also reported on the story on March 17th. On March 19th, the Hard Factor podcast discussed the video (shown below).
