About

Hatsune Miku World Cup Custody Battle, also known as Hatsune Miku World Cup Parental Custody Game, is a social game, meme and fan art trend that emerged during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in which social media users jokingly treat tournament matches as battles for the "custody" of the Japanese virtual singer Hatsune Miku.

The joke proposes that whichever national team defeats the previous holder earns temporary "custody" of the Vocaloid character, inspiring artists to redesign Miku in the country's colors, clothing and cultural motifs until that team is eliminated. The trend spread primarily on X / Twitter during the knockout stage of the tournament, with each successive victory prompting a new wave of nationally themed Hatsune Miku illustrations, memes and edits.

Origin

The meme began around Japan's round of 32 knockout match against Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in late June 2026.

On June 26th, 2026, X[1] user @rosco_graves joked ahead of Japan's game vs. Brazil that "whoever wins keeps Hatsune Miku," receiving over 1.6 million views and 118,000 likes in under two weeks. The post is widely credited with establishing the premise of the "Hatsune Miku custody battle" meme.
