About

Erling Haaland Running, also known as Erling Haaland Chase or simply Haaland Running Meme, refers to an exploitable image macro meme depicting Norwegian pro footballer and soccer player Erling Haaland sprinting toward Iraqi player Zaid Tahseen during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S. The moment took place in mid-June 2026 while Norway was playing Iraq in the group stage, spreading online over the following days as people used screenshots of Haaland's running stance to create memes, depicting him as scary or intimidating.

Origin

The meme stems from a moment during the Norway vs. Iraq match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was held in Boston on June 16th, 2026. Norway ultimately beat Iraq 4-1 as part of the group stage (Group I) in the tournament, with Erling Haaland scoring two goals.

During the clip, Erling Haaland, Norway's striker, is seen sprinting toward Iraqi defender Zaid Tahseen while contesting the ball in their goal box. Most of the clips of the moment that became used in the meme have since been scrubbed from the internet due to copyright claims, but various stills can be seen in the video below.

While clips of Haaland chasing after Tahseen spread online later that day following the game, the earliest known meme was shared by X / Twitter[1] user jiminbas on June 17th, which featured a screenshot and the caption, "Oh, mama." The tweet garnered over 20.8 million views, 201,000 likes and 1,100 replies in a week.

Spread

The Erling Haaland Running meme from the World Cup match between Norway and Iraq continued spreading online in mid-to-late June 2026 as more reactions to the viral moment appeared on social media.

For example, on June 18th, 2026, the Facebook[2] page Nathanistic posted about the moment becoming a viral phenomenon, garnering over 6,300 likes, 70 comments and 360 shares in six days. The post included the text:

Haaland's Beast-Mode Sprint Against Iraq Sparked Terrified Laughs

The chase looked like a horror movie in cleats. Norway crushed Iraq 4-1 in their Group I opener at Gillette Stadium, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, a volley in the 29th minute and a lucky ricochet before halftime. The lasting moment was not even a goal, but a clip of his ponytail-flying pursuit of an Iraqi defender that spread fast and drew terrified laughs.

The reactions wrote themselves around the sheer menace. Viewers joked about the "Iraq defender running for his life" and reached for nightmare comparisons, the sight of a 6-foot-4 striker bearing down at full speed playing like something out of a chase scene. The raw physical dread of being hunted by Haaland turned an ordinary defensive moment into pure meme fuel.

The fun came from pairing that beast with his softer side. Fans contrasted the pitch terror with a 2023 video of Haaland fumbling dance moves and shyly calling BLACKPINK's Jisoo "noona," a clip that paints him as awkward and endearing off the field. The split image of a ruthless finisher and a bashful fanboy is exactly the kind of contrast the internet can't resist replaying.

That same day, TikToker[4] the.sauce77 posted a video about Haaland's sprinting form being compared to a titan from the anime series Attack on Titan, garnering over 261,300 views, 8,600 likes and 30 comments in a similar timeframe.

@the.sauce77 Why does Erling Haaland run like he escaped Attack on Titan? 😭 The comparison is impossible to ignore. Haaland's explosive sprinting style, hunched posture, and massive strides look straight out of an Abnormal Titan scene. Every time he takes off, football fans start making the same joke. At 1.95m tall, he's already built like a Titan. That's why edits constantly cast him as the Colossal Titan smashing through defensive walls, while defenders and rival stars become helpless scouts trying to stop the invasion. But the best match might be the Armored Titan. Both charge forward with a low center of gravity, powerful shoulders, and pure battering-ram energy. Just like the Titan crashes through anything in its path, Haaland bulldozes Premier League defenses at full speed.
