He Will Never Hit the Griddy is a series of He Will Never Be Ballin' memes in which a character doubts that another character from the same franchise will be able to perform the Griddy dance move, with the other character proving them wrong by "hitting the Griddy." Spawned by a viral Riddler's No No No No No! meme, the format saw a continuous presence through 2022.

Origin

On April 16th, 2022, TikToker[1] @michaellhills posted a video of himself cosplaying as Batman and performing the Griddy dance move to a sped-up version of Nirvana's "Something in the Way" from the 2022 The Batman movie. The TikTok gained over 16 million views and 3.5 million likes in seven months (shown below, left).

On April 17th, 2022, the TikTok[2] account @memeverse_ posted a He Will Never Be Ballin' meme based on the video, with The Riddler doubting Batman's ability to perform the Griddy and reacting by screaming "No, no, no no, no!" The video gained over 2.3 million views and 297,000 likes in seven months (shown below, right).

Spread

The video received viral spread online in the following weeks. For example, on April 21st, 2022, iFunny[3] user TheFoulTarnished reposted it to the app, where it was featured and garnered over 20,200 smiles in seven months.

The video was followed by more similar memes, with the spread of the format being assisted by the addition of the Get Griddy emote to Fortnite on April 29th, 2022.[4] For example, on June 8th, 2022, Instagram[5] user munchy.if posted a Star Wars version of the meme that gained over 4,600 views and 1,000 likes in five months (shown below).

In August 2022, following the addition of Dragon Ball Z characters to Fortnite, several He Will Never Hit the Griddy memes went viral on YouTube. For example, a meme posted by YouTuber[6] RickOps on August 19th gained over 556,000 views in three months (shown below).
