Hex Nut is the meme of the month of January according to the 2018 Memes of the Month Calendar, which designates what memes are to be used for that month, whether they have any context to the world outside of that particular community. The use of the image has been especially popular on the /r/meirl subreddit.
Origin
On March 18th, 2017, Redditor[4] Mitsjol posted a Meme of the Month Calendar for 2018 in the /r/meirl subreddit. The post (shown below) received more than 4,300 points (97% upvoted) and 160 comments in nine months.
Nine months later, on December 11th, 2017, Redditor[1] SoldMySoulToReddit posted the same calendar under the title "Leaked 2018 Memes." However, the updated version replaced, among other changes, the January entry from a picture of SpongeBob SquarePants to a photograph of a single hex nut. The post (shown below) received more than 8,000 points (94% upvoted) and 2040 comments within a month.

That day, Redditor Im-not-good-at-names posted the Leaked Memes calendar in the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit.[2]
Starting on January 1st, 2018, Redditors on the /r/meirl subreddit began posting Hex Nut memes. Many times, the pictures of the hex nut were photoshopped into other memes, while others, they are the only subject of the picture.
On January 2nd, Twitter [3] user @ItMeIRL tweeted a picture of the Earth in the shape of a hex nut. Within 24 hours, the post (shown below) received more than 580 retweets and 3,400 likes.
