About

Hey Guys, I'm In New York City, Just Hanging Out refers to a 2014 Vine by Ed Bassmaster that gained popularity in edits in November 2020. In the Vine, Bassmaster is filming himself while walking in New York before noticing a strange-looking individual and reacting humorously. In early edits, various 21st Century Humor sound effects were applied to the video, with higher-effort versions appearing in 2021.

Origin

On July 30th, 2014, comedian Ed Bassmaster uploaded a Vine[1] in which he walks down a street in New York, narrating his experience before getting momentarily distracted by a strange-looking person (Vine shown below). He then shrugs off the encounter after making a funny face.

In early November 2020, unknown users, presumably on Instagram, posted the original Vine, as well as a 21st Century Humor shitpost (shown below) based on it. On November 3rd, 2020, both the original video and the shitpost were reuploaded to YouTube.[2][3]

On April 5th, 2021, YouTube[5] channel Cowbelly Creation posted a green screen template for the meme.

Starting in March 2021, a number of higher-quality edits of the video were posted, mostly on YouTube. For example, on April 12th, 2021, YouTube[6] user nick yeet posted a Dark Souls meme that gained over 460,000 views in one month (shown below).
