About

Homer Simpson in a Lesbian Bar refers to an image macro series using a shot from American animated sitcom The Simpsons. In the image, the character Homer Simpson can be seen as the only male in a bar intended for female-identifying homosexuals. The image has since been used for the purposes of object labeling to express outsiderness or an unpopular opinion.

Origin

On December 18th, 1994, the Simpsons episode "Fear of Flying" aired in the United States.[1] In the episode, Homer (voice by Dan Castellaneta) is banned from his favorite bar and attempts to find a new one, at one point trying a lesbian bar called "She She Lounge" (clip below).

The image was in response to a popular Facebook photo filter that allowed users to express their support for the Supreme Court's decision that homosexual could legally marry. The post received more than 6,000 points and 3,000 views in four years (shown below, center).

Since then, the image has been used to comment on trends and conversations on social media, such as the ubiquity of the French Flag filter after the 2015 Paris Terrorist Attacks (shown below, right).
