About

"I Don't Know What Any Of This Shit Is, And I'm Fucking Scared" is a quote from the Netflix sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson. The line originates from a sketch where a character driving a car reveals he does not know how to drive. The quote and a still of the scene became a meme on Twitter immediately following its debut in July 2021, used in similar contexts to “Afraid to Ask” Andy or I Don't Understand This Meme And At This Point I'm Too Afraid To Ask," but describing a more generalized sense of confusion and fear brought on by not understanding something.

Origin

The second season of I Think You Should Leave premiered on Netflix on July 6th, 2021.[3] The fifth episode, titled "I'm Wearing One of Their Belts Right Now," begins with a sketch where a man played by Tim Robinson, the show's creator, writer and star, is driving his car erratically in a parking lot when he reveals that he does not know how to drive, uttering the quote, "I don't know what any of this shit is, and I'm fucking scared" (seen below).

Within hours of the show's premiere, the image began seeing use as a meme. Journalist Karen Han uploaded screenshots of the sketch to Twitter[1] the next day, receiving over 100 retweets and 1,000 likes in a month (shown below).

Spread

In the following weeks, numerous tweets using the image were made and shared on the platform. For example, on August 18th, 2021, Twitter[2] user @LessIsMoh tweeted an example of the meme about the 2021 Taliban offensive in Afghanistan (seen below). The tweet received over 300 retweets and 4,400 likes in five days.
