About
If You Look Like This, DM Me is a popular copypasta used primarily on Twitter to proclaim admiration for another person or fictional character's appearance.
Origin
The meme originally started as a way to attract potential sexual partners online for online sex workers, using the phrase to express sexual desire for a specific type of person. On June 8th, 2009, Twitter[1] user @thizgurl posted the earliest known version of the phrase. They wrote, "If you look Like this DM me and I will Fuck you no questions asked!"
Over the next few years, the phrase grew slowly in usage. For example, on May 19th, 2012, Twitter[2] user @JennyWalo posted a photograph of a man in a Kansas City Chiefs hat with the caption (shown below, left).
On December 12th, 2017, the meme went viral as people began posting the caption with images of fictional characters. This series began with a tweet[3] by @CaitlinRielly, who posted an image of the character Danny Phantom from the Nickelodeon animated series Danny Phantom. The post received more than 10,000 likes and 5,000 retweets in less than four years (shown below, right).
Spread
Following the Danny Phantom post, people began creating and sharing variants en masse. On December 15th, 2017, Twitter[4] user @SLASHSLASHDead posted the caption with an image of the skeletal formula for serotonin. The post received more than 36,000 likes and 15,000 retweets in less than four years (shown below, left).
Over the next few years, the phrase continued to grow in usage on Twitter, going viral again in 2020. On June 16th, 2020, professional esports player Austin Pamaj posted an image of the Ballista from Call of Duty[5][6]. The post received more than 12,000 likes and 1,000 retweets in less than one year (shown below, center). Throughout the year, others shared variants, which helped keep the meme in regular circulation on Twitter (example below, right).
