I'm Gonna Kick Your Son In the Ribs refers to an exploitable Facebook thread in which a woman shows an image of her child dressed up in a specific outfit. Another user replies "Why would your son enjoy being dressed like X? I'm gonna kick your son in the ribs."

Origin

In the original screenshot, a woman shows her son being dressed up as Donald Trump. A user replies "Why would he enjoy being a dickhead? I'm gonna kick your son in the ribs." The screenshot was first posted to Tumblr by user iwishihadafather on November 4th, 2015, gaining over 495,000 notes.^[2] That day, an edited version was posted to Funnyjunk (shown below).^[1]

Spread

The image spread through Tumblr and began appearing on other sites. For example, on April 24th, 2016, the image appeared on /r/the_donald, where it gained over 2,400 points.^[3] Exploitable edits began appearing shortly after the original was posted. For example, A Tony Abbot edit was posted to KnowYourMeme on November 13th, 2015 (shown below, left). A Linda Glocke joke was uploaded to KnowYourMeme on November 20th, 2015 (shown below, right).

Many of the images created in the template were inspired by pop culture. For example, some popular edits include an Overwatch parody posted to Tumblr by kuueater that gained over 9,800 notes (shown below, left). On August 28th, 2016, Imgur user twopiecesoftoast posted a history meme with the template (shown below, right).
