Instagram Confession Accounts are a continuation of Confession Blogs in which Instagram users submit their anonymous confessions to a highly curated and aesthetically cohesive confession account to be posted. The accounts, which saw a significant rise in popularity around 2017, typically center around a certain theme such as a specific school, musical group or just general teen confessions.
Origin
Confession Blogs and Facebook pages dedicated to posting confessions have been around since the early 1990s. Instagram users began creating confession accounts as early as 2014. On November 29th, 2014 Instagram user that.confession.post[1] uploaded one of the earliest known confession posts (shown below).
Spread
In 2014, many middle school and high school students began launching confession Instagram accounts that was created for classmates only. Most of those accounts are private (shown below).[2] Some articles have been written for parents regarding confession posts and bullying.[4]
In 2017, Instagram confession accounts geared toward posting anonymous confessions surround the theme of a favorite band or TV series began appearing. For example, Blink182confessions[3] posts fan submitted confessions centered around the bad (shown below, center). Many Confession Instagram accounts grew to gain thousands of followers in 2019. On August 11th, dropconfession[5] uploaded a confession which received over 9,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).
