Bilestan and the Bilestani People refers to an imaginary country and its people, getting its namesake from the Instagram irony meme page bileboye (@bileboye) whose followers began posting comments that referenced Bilestan, the Bilestani people and their nemeses, the Moghdari people from Moghdar, starting in mid-2022. In 2023, verbose Bilestan comments spread across Instagram's Hood Irony community, resulting in curiosity about Bilestan's origin.

Origin

Instagram user @bileboye posted their first post to Instagram^[1] on November 25th, 2021. On January 17th, 2022, in the comment section of a @bilboye Instagram^[2] post, user @cartermaddoxwheaton commented, "Bile motorsports," becoming the first-known bile-related comment. Comments that followed the phrasal template "bile X" on @bilboye's Instagram^[3][4] persisted going into 2022. On May 21st, 2022, @bileboye posted a Reel to Instagram^[5] with the caption, "Bilestani youth program," gaining over 380 likes in one year (shown below). The post is the first-discovered utterance of "Bilestan" or "Bilestani."

Prior to the aforementioned post, on May 19th, 2022, @bileboye posted a video to Instagram^[6] with the caption, "Moghdari super soldier," becoming the account's first utterance of Bilestan's counter state Moghdar and the Moghdari people (shown below).

Spread

Despite a 2022 origin, the comment sections of @bileboye's posts became centered on Bilestan and Moghdar more so in 2023. For instance, on February 1st, 2023, in the comments of a @bileboye post,^[7] Instagram user @basedcu6z commented, "Isn’t this just Bilestan? This already happened," gaining over 180 likes (shown below, left). In the comments of a March 1st post,^[8] Instagram user @foompus commented, "Moghdari royalty, a perfect example of the consequences of inbreeding," gaining over 190 likes (shown below, right).

Comments under @bileboye's posts continued to reference Bilestan and Moghdar going into mid-2023. Over the course of a year and a half, @bileboye's account gained roughly 27,100 followers.
