James Harden's Red Eyes refers to an image of NBA star James Harden of the Houston Rockets after getting poked in the eye by Draymond Green in Game 2 of the Rockets-Warriors Western Conference Semifinals. The still image of Harden's eyes afterwards was used as a reaction image on Twitter with captions describing situations where one might tear up.
Origin
During Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Warriors and Rockets, Draymond Green accidentally poked James Harden in the eye (shown below).
The caused Harden's eyes to redden and tear, which the TNT broadcast caught on camera (shown below).
Spread
After the image was posted to Twitter by Bleacher Report,[1] others used it with captions describing sad moments. For example, user @_Zeets made a Game of Thrones joke, gaining over 640 retweets and 3,200 likes (shown below, left). User @Chenzo323 made a joke which gained over 2,400 retweets and 8,000 likes (shown below, right).
While the majority of jokes were crying based, several popular tweets made jokes about marijuana, which can turn one's eyes red after using. Some popular tweets in this ilk include one by @theDYNAMICS that gained over 190 retweets and 1,000 likes (shown below, left). The jokes were covered by Twitter Moments.[2]
