About

Jerry Lawler Laugh, also known as Jerry Lawler Laughing and Shrugging, refers to a GIF of WWF wrestler and commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler looking amused at the camera and chuckling to himself. In early 2022, the GIF became a prominent reaction in image macros, as people paired it with captions describing situations one might find silly and absurd.

Origin

It's unclear when exactly the moment of Lawler laughing at the camera aired, though it was when the WWE was known as the WWF and likely aired on Monday Night Raw. On September 11th, 2015, internet user SatanicMonkey posted the GIF to theo.minuspoint.com[1] (shown below).

Spread

The GIF did not start seeing consistent use as a meme until late January 2022, when it appeared in multiple Reddit posts that gained hundreds of thousands of points. One of the earliest was posted on January 27th to /r/memes[2] by Redditor dischead20 (shown below, left). The popularity of the post led user elch3w to post a template version on Kapwing[3] and /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial,[4] where the post gained over 4,700 points in two days (shown below, right).

Over the following few days, multiple edits of the GIF gained tens of thousands of points on Reddit. For example, Redditor Dansydemansy's January 31st edit in /r/memes[5] gained over 151,000 points in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). User 8Bit_Innovations posted an edit in /r/dankmemes[6] on February 1st that gained over 58,000 points in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
