About

The Josh Hutcherson "Whistle" Edit refers to a 2014 fancam edit on YouTube that uses the song "Whistle" by Joel Merry (a cover of the original "Whistle" by Flo Rida) and centers on actor Josh Hutcherson (known for The Hunger Games and the Five Nights at Freddy's movie). The objectively horny and thirsty edit gained notoriety in the late 2010s, peaking in popularity in late 2023, directly following the release of the FNaF movie. The TikTok trend involved playing the edit on strange devices or revealing it as hidden in many objects such as in Halloween candy like a bait-and-switch prank. The trend was similar to memes about the Josh Hutcherson Chair Scene.

Origin

Two years before the upload of the more notable Josh Hutcherson "Whistle" edit, YouTuber[1] mariela5511 posted a video called "JOSH HUTCHERSON // WHISTLE" on September 1st, 2012, which received over 14,900 views in 11 years.

On October 12th, 2014, YouTuber[2] MetroGirlzStation posted a similar video called "Josh Hutcherson || Whistle" which was a fan-made edit of actor Josh Hutcherson (known at the time for his role as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games franchise) set to the song "Whistle" by Joel Merry (a cover of the original "Whistle" by Flo Rida). Over nine years, the video gained roughly 160,500 views and 14,000 likes (shown below). In the 2020s, the video gained meme attention as opposed to its precursor.

On November 3rd, 2023, TikToker[10] @hutchers posted the "Whistle" edit with Josh Hutcherson, coinciding with the then-recent release of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie. Over two months, the video received roughly 6.3 million plays and 1.1 million likes (shown below).

Spread

Discourse about the "Whistle" edit surfaced en masse in November 2023, starting with non-viral tweets[3][4] posted as early as November 7th, 2023. The tweets were most likely in response to a since-deleted TikTok video posted on or before November 7th, likely the origin of a since-deleted TikTok sound[5] from a user named ᶜˡᵃᵖᵗᵒⁿ.

The earliest still accessible upload of the "Whistle" edit was posted by TikToker[6] @misowenfr on November 8th, 2023, who received roughly 195,600 plays and 15,100 likes in six days (shown below, left). Soon after, users on the app started to play the video on strange devices. The first to do so was TikToker[7] @dirty_floor_marshmallow on November 11th, who projected the video on a garage door, gaining over 408,800 plays and 98,100 likes in three days (shown below, right).

The devices that people played the video on then became increasingly elaborate, evident in a video posted by TikToker[8] @nico.robins.real.husband on November 12th, 2023, which showed the video on many phones, tablets and a TV, gaining over 830,100 plays and 257,600 likes in two days (shown below, left).

On November 13th, 2023, TikToker[9] @greysxvsp_ posted a video that joked about the "Whistle" edit being in an ice tray, gaining roughly 3.3 million plays and 837,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).
