Kanye Jumpscare or Kanye West Jumpscare refers to a viral video showing the album cover for Kanye West's album Ye with the top-text reading "Kanye Jumpscare" in which a still image of West's face flies onto screen and screams. The video started circulating around Instagram in July 2021.

Origin

The earliest video of a Kanye West-themed jumpscare was uploaded to YouTube[2] on April 29th, 2020, and shows someone flipping a pancake to reveal West's face (shown below).



On July 31st, YouTuber[6] Stanboo posted a video of Minecraft streamer Ranboo walking into a hole in-game and seeing Kanye West's face halfway down unexpectedly, planted by another server member as a jumpscare (shown below). The clip gained over 96,000 views in three days and was reposted a number of times to YouTube. This is a running joke on Ranboo's stream (another example shown below, right).

On August 1st, 2021, Instagram[1] user @yuporganic posted a video with the top-text reading "Kanye Jumpscare" that appears to be an image of West's album Ye, until West's face flies onto screen and screams (shown below). The scream is taken from West's song "Yikes" from the same year. The video gained over 20,000 views and 7,300 likes in two days and is the earliest known upload.



Spread

Yuporganic's jumpscare video was shared numerous times across social media over the following week, gaining considerable interaction through reposts. On August 1st, the video was shared on the /r/Kanye[3] subreddit. On the same day, Instagram[4] page @grandmas.butt posted the video, gaining over 156,000 views and 54,000 likes in two days. On August 2nd, Instagram[5] meme page @salad.snake shared it, gaining over 126,000 views and 37,000 likes in a day.
