About
Killing Myself Postponed refers to a series of reaction images based on an Instagram story showing a 00:00:00 countdown timer to "Killing Myself." Versions of the image edited with captions such as "Postponed," "Back on" and "Rescheduled" saw extensive use online as reaction images since June 2023.
Origin
Prior to June 11th, 2023, an unknown Instagram user posted a story with a timer, with the title of the timer reading "Killing myself." A screenshot of the completed timer has been used as a reaction image since mid-June 2023.
On June 11th, 2023, X[1] / Twitter user @ChileanCrave posted the earliest found post with a version of the image, with the word "Postponed" superimposed over it, using it as a reaction to Chile's football team scoring against Cuba (shown below).
On June 14th, X[2] / Twitter account Reactions (@reactjpg) archived the image together with another version recaptioned "Back on." In the thread, X[3] user @5ofangels posted the original version of the image (shown below, left).
Spread
In the following months, multiple versions of the image, commonly the "postponed" edit altered with one or more additional captions, were used on X / Twitter as reactions. On October 25th, 2023, X[4] user @kyucaine made a thread of such images (examples shown below).
Online, versions of the image have often been used to react to positive and negative news. For example, on November 13th, 2023, X[5] user @romanticalz used a version of the image to react to My Chemical Romance staying an active band, with the post garnering over 1,000 reposts and 5,700 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On April 11th, 2024, X[6] user @thefilmdrunk used a version of the meme to react to a new movie by director Damien Chazelle (shown below, right).
