Kim Kardashian's Like Butter Tweet refers to a social media post by reality television star Kim Kardashian West, promoting the Yeezy Butter 350 shoes, which were designed by her husband Kanye West. The photograph in the post features Kardashian lying on a bed wearing underwear and the shoes. Online, people have since mocked the photograph via jokes and photoshop edits.
Origin
On August 6th, 2018, Kim Kardashian West tweeted [1] a photograph of herself wearing the Butter 350 shoes and underwear on a bed. She captioned the tweet, "Like butter. #Butter350’s #Yeezy." The post (shown below) received more that 4,100 retweets and 49,000 likes in 24 hours. When the image was posted to Kardashain's Instagram [9] page, the post received more than 2.8 million likes and 30,000 comments.
Spread
Shortly after Kardashian posted the photograph, people on Twitter began reinterpreting it for humorous effect. That day, Twitter[2] user @ADAMATION photoshopped her body out of the original photograph and onto a photograph from the San Fransisco Marathon. The post (shown below, left) received more than 300 retweets and 1,600 likes in 24 hours.
One of the most popular tweets about the photograph was also posted that day. Comparing Kardashian's pose to the physical position of the toys in Toy Story when humans are present, Twitter[3] user @Troyavision captioned the photograph, "toys when Andy walked in the room." The post (shown below, center) received more than 27,000 retweets and 91,000 likes in 24 hours.
Twitter[4] user @AngelTFC made a similar joke to @Troyavision, photoshopping the image of Kardashian into a toy box from Toy Story. The post (shown below, right) received more than 9,100 retweets and 21,000 likes in 24 hours.
On August 7th, Twitter[5] published a Moments page about the response to the photograph. Additionally, several media outlets covered the photograph, including Mashable, [6] Business Insider,[7] Highsnobiety[8] and more.
