About

Kroger Lower Than Low Deals Ad refers to a computer-animated advertisement for grocery store chain Kroger that became the subject of memes in early January 2021 following its release. The advertisement notably uses Flo Rida's "Get Low"[1] and features an animated character dancing, similar to the GrubHub Delivery Dance from November 2020, which was also the subject of memes.

Origin

On September 14th, 2020, Kroger released an animated advertisement in which a series of animated characters called Krojis look at the Kroger app on their phones and dance to the 2002 song "Low" by Flo Rida to celebrate the savings they're awarded, garnering over 590,000 views on YouTube[4] in 5 months (shown below).

On January 5th, 2021, Kroger released an advertisement in which an animated man in a green sweater and Crocs clips a digital coupon for chicken on his phone then dances to the 2002 Flo Rida song, "Low," followed by a number of other animated characters doing the same (shown below). The YouTube[2] upload of the ad gained over 848,000 views in a month.

Spread

The release of the second animated Kroger ad came only weeks after a similar GrubHub ad went viral as a meme, which helped the Kroger ad gain viral popularity.

On January 6th, /u/JeddakofThark made a post to /r/ComerrcialsIHate that includes an image pointing out the things the user hates about the ad, garnering over 550 upvotes in a month (shown below).

On January 13th, YouTuber Linny uploaded a video to YouTube[5] consisting of the Kroger ad but with the GrubHub ad sound (shown below,) garnering over 788,000 views in under a month.

On January 14th, Whirow94 uploaded a video to YouTube[7] titled, "if the grubhub ad contains cringe, it switches to the kroger ad" combining the two memes, garnering over 1.5 million views in roughly 3 weeks (shown below, left). On January 15th, revified uploaded another GrubHub crossover meme to YouTube[8] replacing the guy in the Grubhub ad with the green sweatered Kroji, garnering over 828,000 views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).

On February 3rd, 2021, Winsight Grocery Business[3] published an article detailing how the commercial became a meme.

Compared to the Grubhub ad, I have to admit that the Kroger ad is more thematically appropriate.
For this, at least it's "get low prices so get down low".
Meanwhile, the Grubhub ad is literally just "price makes me want to dance"
