Lance Stroll Interrupts refers to a series of bait-and-switch in which a clip of Formula 1 racer Lance Stroll driving cuts into various tense and important scenes. The meme is a parody of a moment in the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix where the broadcast cut from a tense situation at the front of the race to show Stroll bumping into a wall.

Origin

On May 23rd, 2021, at the Monaco Grand Prix, a tense moment occurred when racer Sebastian Vettel overtook Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gastly, who were towards the front of the race. However, rather than showing how the situation resolved, the broadcast cut to a replay of racer Lance Stroll, in 10th at the time, bumping into a wall and cutting a kerb (shown below).

The moment inspired fans and YouTubers to make create parodies in which the clip of Stroll bumping into a wall interrupts tense moments in film, sports and pop culture. For example, on May 25th, 2021, YouTuber FormulaShorts posted a video in which the Stroll clip interrupts a tense moment in a Manchester City football match, gaining over 171,000 views (shown below, left). The same day, user Tecnation posted a video of the Stroll clip interrupting the moon landing (shown below, right).

Numerous compilations have been made of examples of the meme. Examples include an example by The Friendly Kurniawan (shown below, left) and DaviD (shown below, right).

The clip also inspired memes on Reddit. For example, Redditor GeenNieuwDesign posted a Godzilla vs. Kong vs. Cheems meme about the moment in /r/formuladank,^[1] gaining over 4,200 points (shown below, left). User ibrinidhil posted an example showing Stroll interrupting the moon landing in /r/formuladank,^[2] gaining over 3,00 points (shown below, right).
