About

Light Work, No Reaction is a catchphrase and audio sample sourced from Twitch streamer and YouTuber Jynxzi eating hot wings on stream, claiming that it's "light work" causing "no reaction," only to eventually have the spice hit him when he says, "Okay, it's got a little kick." The original video became a TikTok sound and trend in mid-2023, following a version of the audio that sped up and slowed down the words "light work, no reaction." The memes that used the audio most often portrayed a scenario in which a challenge becomes increasingly harder.

Origin

On April 11th, 2023, Twitch streamer and YouTuber Jynxzi uploaded a video to YouTube[1] called, "1 death = WORLD's HOTTEST WING (ALMOST DIED)," in which every time he died in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege he had to eat a spicy chicken wing. At the video's 27:21-minute mark, Jynxzi told his viewers that there was one wing left. He decided to eat it, and while doing so, he looked into the camera, repeating, "Light work, no reaction," until he eventually said, "Okay, it's got a little kick," to which he started eating ice cream (shown below). Over the course of two months, the video gained roughly 499,400 views and 19,000 likes.

The clip didn't become a meme until May 2023 when TikToker[2] @roundsound.spkr posted a video (since deleted) that sped up and slowed down the progression of Jynxzi's words. Although the original video has since been deleted, many TikTokers started to use the TikTok[3] sound that was created by @roundsound.spkr's video. For instance, the earliest discovered video to use the sound was posted by TikToker[4] @prestodubb on May 19th, 2023, used for a video about his car, gaining roughly 472,500 plays and 76,100 likes in three weeks (shown below).

Spread

Going into late May 2023, more viral usage of the TikTok[3] sound persisted. For instance, on May 30th, 2023, TikToker[5] @trafalgarlawgaming posted a video about Luffy from One Piece using the sound, gaining roughly 305,200 plays and 52,000 likes in 15 days (shown below, left). The sound became increasingly viral in June 2023. For instance, on June 8th, 2023, TikToker[6] @raph.yyy_ used the sound to make a joke about the 2023 Canada Wildfire smoke, gaining roughly 531,400 plays and 100,900 likes in six days (shown below, right).

Thereafter, viral usage of the TikTok[3] sound continued, amassing roughly 12,900 videos using it by June 14th, 2023. The videos and memes also started to get reposted elsewhere, such as on YouTube[7][8] (examples shown below).
