Overview
Lily, also known as the Duolingo Goth Girl, is a mascot character part of the language acquisition app Duolingo. Lily is known for her purple-colored character palette and her mean and stand-offish demeanor. Duolingo announced its new "Project World" character upgrade in 2020, with Lily gathering a fanbase that draws thirsty fan art and creates memes soon after she was introduced.

Lily was one of the new Duolingo characters announced in 2020. She is described as an "introverted, unenthused, deadpan goth teen, who secretly cares a lot." She is characterized by her angular purple hair and frown and is often pictured with her hands crossed.[2]

Lily gathered a following online soon after her release in 2020, with many people expressing that they were drawn to her mean and stand-offish attitude. On May 11th, 2021, Redditor[3] /u/Slothlover_01 made a post to /r/okbuddyretard, sharing a picture of Lily alongside a caption that read, "Shut up, I'm thinking about the Duolingo Goth Girl." The post gathered over 22,000 likes in three years (seen below, left).
On August 11th, 2021, Duolingo's official X[4] account quoted a post commending Lily as a "goth," calling her "Goth of the Year" and gathering over 2,000 likes in three years (seen below, right).
On April 6th, 2023, Duolingo's official Instagram[5] page posted a version of the Disaster Girl meme featuring Lily, gathering over 6,000 likes in a year. Lily also became the subject of fan art soon after her release in 2020, with artists reinterpreting her in their own art styles. This can be seen in an April 10th post by X[6] user @_megrocks, which gathered over 30,000 likes in a year (seen below, right).
