About

Man crying in the Bar or Chorando no Boteco in Portuguese refers to an image macro meme of a man sitting at a bar table with a cigarette between his fingers and drinks in front of him. In the background, two men, with their guitars and microphones, seem to chant a sad song. The meme started in 2015 and is used to describe people's reactions while listening to their favorite songs or to express their feelings when something sad happens.

Origin

On March 9th, 2015 the Brazilian poet Bráulio Bessa shared a post on his Instagram[1] about the moment he photographed a man named Zé Eudo de Dona Santana emotionally crying at a bar after going through a serious health problem. The post (see below) had 2,415 likes and 253 comments in 8 years.

Years later, on April 9th, 2020, the author of the picture posted a Twitter thread[2] explaining the story behind the meme, saying that the duo performing in the image, Roberto Alves and Zé Nilson Ferreira, sang "Conversando com Deus" while the man cried emotionally. He also explained that "the scene was so poetic that I had to record."

Spread

The image was used to illustrate moments of "suffering" for love reasons, drunkenness, how people feel while listening to a sad song and many other situations, like this tweet by a soccer team blog @colunadofla[3] using a photoshopped version of the man crying in the bar wearing the team’s jersey with the caption telling how sad they are because the team wouldn’t play any matches on the weekend. The post had 152 likes and 44 retweets in five years (seen below).

Anime fans also used the image to create a Dragon Ball Z version of the meme posted on November 11th, 2018 by @cinderelabaiana[4]. the fan artwork was created by @momorsa[5], showing the anime characters Vegeta and Bulma as the singer and Yamcha as the man crying in the bar (seen below). The tweet earned 246 likes in three years.
