Mario's Flat Butt refers to a viral debate spawned by a movie poster for the untitled 2023 Super Mario Bros. Film showing Mario standing with his back turned towards the camera, his buttocks noticeably smaller than in Super Mario Odyssey and many other Super Mario video games. The size of Mario's buttocks getting toned down became a subject of discussions and memes on social media in early October 2022 leading up to the movie's first trailer release.

Origin

On October 4th, 2022, at 10 a.m. EST, the official Twitter^[1] account of Nintendo of America tweeted the first poster for the untitled 2023 Super Mario film. The poster, which shows Mario's back, gained over 21,000 retweets and 108,600 likes in one day (shown below).

Spread

Within two minutes of the poster being posted, the artist RJ Palmer made the first viral tweet^[2] mentioning Mario's smaller buttocks size. The tweet (shown below, left) gained over 1,000 retweets and 14,300 likes in one day. Several minutes later, RJ Palmer tweeted^[3] a "fixed" version of the poster that received over 2,100 retweets and 13,100 likes in one day (shown below, right).

In the following hours, the size of Mario's buttocks in the movie became a highly discussed topic on Twitter. For example, on that day, Twitter^[4] user @SimplyFir made a post comparing the size of Mario's buttocks in Super Mario Odyssey and in the movie that accumulated over 40,600 retweets and 472,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). Later that day, Twitter^[5] user @MegaChanRevival then added Luigi to the poster, enlarging his buttocks. The tweet gained over 2,800 retweets and 47,000 likes (shown below, right).
