Donkey Kong Punch Edits refers to remixes of a clip from a trailer for the The Super Mario Bros. Movie in which Donkey Kong says "Now, you die" and punches Mario. In the edits, the character Donkey Kong is punching will usually be altered.

Origin

On January 29th, 2023, the official Super Mario Bros. Movie Twitter account released the "Cat Mario Reveal Trailer," showing Mario getting the catsuit power-up in a fight with Donkey Kong.^[1] Donkey Kong is unimpressed and goes to punch Mario as the trailer ends. It was posted by YouTuber BeardBear the next day and gained 1.8 million views in two days (shown below).

Spread

After the trailer was posted, edits of Donkey Kong punching other characters began getting appearing on YouTube. For example, on January 30th, YouTube^{[4] [5]} user SideBlock posted an example splicing the clip with the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, gaining over 24,000 views in two days (shown below, left). The same day, YouTuber Wolf posted an edit mixing the clip with the Do I Amuse You? meme, gaining over 30,000 views (shown below, right).

Edits were also popularized on Twitter^{[2] [3]} in the replies to the official post of the trailer. For example, on January 29th, 2023, user @tumstambaugh11 posted an edit crossing the clip with Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, gaining over 2,100 retweets and 13,000 likes in two days (shown below, top). User @Mobidud posted an edit using the "Kill yourself… Now!" audio, gaining over 80 retweets and 700 likes (shown below, bottom).
