About

Meme Invertido or Negative Filter Meme in English refers to a series of visual effect memes in which a negative filter is utilized to reverse a photo, altering the meaning of a popular phrase or meme. The trend became popular in May 2021 with Brazilian Twitter users, mixing elements of the "Evil X be like" meme and the "finally upgrade" meme.

Origin

On May 10th, 2021, Twitter[1] user @fernandixmos responded to the tweet of the Brazilian singer Duda Beat in which she asks for memes created about her latest album "Te Amo Lá Fora" (Love You Outside). He uploaded a negative filter version of the album cover and reversed the meaning of the album’s name to “Te Odeio Aqui Dentro” (Hate You Inside). The post (seen below, left) received 40 likes and 7 retweets in two years. On the same month, Twitter[2] user @vidadetreinador posted an image of the Pokémon character Ash with a reversed phrase saying that “friends always leave you behind and absolutely nothing of them stays with you.” The tweet (seen below, right), uploaded on May 20th, 2021, garnered 295 likes and 48 retweets in two years.

Te Odeio Aqui Dentro Veja bem, amigos SEMPRE TE ABANDONAM, e ABSOLUTAMENTE NADA DELES fica com você.

Spread

The meme reached other fan accounts on Twitter, which started to post their own negative filter memes. For instance, a Brazilian singing duo called Anavitória (seen below, left), which can read in Portuguese as “Ana*victory*, had their name reversed to Anaderrota (Anadefeat) by Twitter[3] user @nillobarreto on June 5th, 2021. The post (seen below, right) received 296 likes and 49 retweets in eighteen months.

ANADERROTA

Another famous Brazilian singer, Tim Maia (seen below, left), was featured in a meme by Twitter[4] user @ailtonmesquita on June 6th, 2021. The singer has a song saying “I don’t want money, I want an honest love,” which was reversed to “I want money” and used with a negative filter over the singer’s face. The tweet (seen below, right) garnered 90,600 likes and 26,100 retweets in two years.
