Stay In Character is a catchphrase and series of memes based on a scene from the 2026 Backrooms movie in which the protagonist, Clark (played by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor), yells, "Stay in character!" while talking to the character Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), who replies, "I'm not your wife!"

In June 2026, the film's scene became the subject of numerous memes on TikTok as the moment was used as an exploitable format with brainrot edits, recreations, Accuracy Reenactments and more. The meme is also used as a simple reaction image and GIF online.

Origin

The original scene used in the meme comes from the Backrooms film, which was released on May 29th, 2026. In the scene, the character Clark is seen talking to Mary, who is bound to a chair inside the Backrooms with him. Clark explains to her that the dimension transforms memories of real people into emotionless entities known as "Still Life," and then tries to force Mary to participate in a reenactment of the night his wife, Barbara, left him, telling her to "stay in character" when she refuses.

Edited versions of the clip depicting Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Mary (Renate Reinsve) that are used in the Stay In Character memes began appearing online shortly after the movie's release in late May 2026.

For instance, on May 30th, 2026, TikTok^[1] user jim4fx posted a fancam style edit of Mary that starts with the Stay In Character clip, garnering over 49,200 likes and 400 comments in a month.

Basic memes using the Backrooms clip with text captions added also began appearing around the same timeframe. On June 4th, 2026, TikToker^[2] freightlane7 shared an early meme example with the caption, "When hb [homeboy] don't stay in character on our date," receiving over 15,100 likes and 400 comments in a month.

Spread

Over the following weeks, the Stay In Character meme continued garnering virality as it spread on social media, primarily TikTok, and was adapted into a range of memes and jokes in mid-2026.

For example, on June 9th, 2026, TikTok^[5] user jack_a_boy_222 posted another example using a text caption to create a meme about the video game Tomodachi Life, receiving over 221,000 likes and 620 comments in three weeks.

On June 14th, 2026, TikToker^[3] el.cruzer posted an Accuracy Reenactment of the scene, garnering over 25,000 likes and 400 comments in two weeks.

On June 15th, TikTok^[4] user dizzyydreamer uploaded a recreation of the scene using characters from the mobile game Gacha Life, receiving over 115,400 likes and 780 comments in two weeks.

On June 18th, 2026, X / Twitter^[6] user renthel0ser shared a redraw of the scene using characters from Limbus Company, garnering over 118,500 views, 9,100 likes and 40 replies in two weeks.

On June 21st, Redditor DrScrimble posted a Dungeons and Dragons meme using the format to the /r/dndmemes^[7] subreddit, receiving roughly 500 upvotes and 10 comments in 11 days.

On June 26th, 2026, Redditor I_eat_wood3686 posted another image macro example of the meme to the /r/dankmemes^[8] subreddit, garnering over 1,000 upvotes in six days.
