Miss Rona is a nickname given to the coronavirus mainly used by black Twitter starting in February 2020. Miss Rona is commonly depicted on Twitter as the virus with hoop earrings and long nails.

Origin

On February 28th, Twitter user @ShannonNtheCity^[1] first mentioned Miss Rona in a tweet replying to an image of a bold ginger ale drink saying, "Just in time to cure Miss ‘Rona" (shown below).

Spread

On March 15th, 2020, Twitter user @jules_kto^[2] posted an image of a virus with hoop earrings and long nails with the caption, "Miss Rona flexing after her successful world tour" (shown below, left). On March 18th, Twitter user @nothighfr^[3] photoshopped Miss Rona into a Red Table Talk episode with the caption, "next weeks episode of red table talk looks lit, we might finally get some answers from miss rona" (shown below, right). The tweet garnered over 300 likes in five days.

The next day, Twitter user @SoDebNair^[4] tweeted, "White People: COVID-19 Black Folks: the RONA Gay People : Miss Rona" which received over 302,500 likes and 44,000 retweets in four days (shown below). StayHipp^[5] published an article on the character.
