Shoot Dance is a dance move in which the participant hops on one foot, kicks with the opposite food and shake their fist by moving their elbow. The dance debuted in the music video for the song "Shoot" by BlocBoy JB.

Origin

On July 25th, 2017, the YouTube [1] for BlocBoy JB posted the video for "Shoot." In the video, a group of men do a dance in which they hop on one foot and shake their fist. The post (shown below) received more than 16 million views in less than one year.

Spread

Over the next few months, people began uploading videos of themselves doing the dance to YouTube, Instagram and more. On September 5th, YouTuber[2] Don Clay posted a video of a man in a headdress doing the dance. The post (shown below, left) received more than 15,000 views in nine months.

Two months later, YouTuber[3] ZaeHD ! posted a video of three people doing the dance. The post (shown below, right) received more than 11 million views in seven months.

As the dance grew in popularity, people became posting videos to engage in what was being called the "Shoot Dance Challenge. "On March 20th, 2018, YouTuber[4] Guava Juice publsihed a video for the "Shoot Dance Challenge." The post (shown below) received more than 4.9 million views in a month and a half.

Fortnite "Hype" Emote

On May 1st, users on the video game Fortnite reported a new "emote", an expressive movement for characters with the game to make, called "Hype," which is similar to the BlocBoy JB dance.[5]

That day, BlocBoy JB tweeted[6] a video of a side-by-side of BlocBoy JB doing the dance next to someone doing "hype." He captioned the video (shown below), "Fortnite 😂 🍇 #SIMI." The post (shown below) received more than 3,100 retweets and 8,400 likes in two days.

Several media outlets reported about the emote, including XXL,[7] HotNewHipHop,[8] Hypebeast[9] and more.



Proposed Lawsuit

After a string of high-profile lawsuits, on December 20th, BlocBoy JB tweeted,[10] "Should I Sue Fortnite Or Nah." The tweet received more than 18,000 retweets and 139,000 likes in 24 hours.

Some online support BlocBoy JB's proposed lawsuit, others suggested working with Epic Games. For example, Twitter[11] user @BillyRay2_14 tweeted, "Do a partnership and figure out a way to patent your dance. Just ask them to add your song in the game when someone goes to buy your dance" (shown below, left). Meanwhile, Twitter[12] user @ralphy0604 tweeted, "Hell yeah secure the bag," indicating that the rapper should be compensated for the dance and sue the developer (shown below, right).

Several media outlets covered the tweet and proposed suit, including Complex,[13] XXL,[14] The Daily Dot [15] and more.

Replying to @BlocBoy_JB Do a partnership and figure out a way to patent your dance. Just ask them to add your song in the game when someone goes to buy your dance
