Mother I Crave Violence is an online catchphrase, derived from an original sound on TikTok, in which a man says the phrase "mother I crave violence" in a nasally voice. The sound is commonly used over footage of cats play fighting, brandishing their claws or looking otherwise threatening and was popularized throughout 2020, seeing an increase in interest in early 2021.

Origin

On November 8th, 2019, Twitter[4] user @giingerja uploaded an original piece of art depicting a closeup of the Pokemon Dragapult's shoulder canon containing a young Dreepy (the first evolutionary form of Dragapult) saying, "Mother, I crave violence" (shown below). Dragapult has the ability to shoot Dreepies out of cannons on its shoulders to attack opponents. The image gained over 260 likes and 190 retweets in just over a year. The image was reposted to Know Your Meme[6] on November 12th, garnering over 16,000 views, and to iFunny[5] on December 29th, garnering over 140 smiles in a comparable span of time.

On February 28th, 2020, TikToker[1] @_senpaii_1 uploaded a video of their Nintendo 3DS screen displaying Dragapult in Pokemon Shield. In the video, the TikToker zooms in on a Dragapult baby sitting in its shoulder cannon and says, "Mother… Mother, I crave violence" in a comedic voice (shown below). The video gained over 677,000 views in a year.

Spread

The sound to @_senpaii_1's video gained considerable spread over the course of the year as TikTokers used it over footage of their cats looking threatening. For example, on June 29th, TikToker[2] @feluciferx uploaded a video set to the sound in which her cat casually bites her, garnering over 3.7 million views in eight months (shown below, left). On July 24th, TikToker[3] @amyshideaway posted a video of her kitten playfully attacking her foot under a blanket, garnering over 2 million views in seven months (shown below, right). As of February 26th, 2021, these are two of the most popular videos using the sound, which has been used in over 39,000 videos as of the same date.

The sound continued to see use on TikTok throughout 2020, with the isolated phrase spreading outside of the platform. For example, on October 21st, Redditor /u/Taggynatty uploaded an image of their bird to /r/cockatiel[7] along with the post title "Mother I crave violence" garnering over 1,200 upvotes in four months (shown below).

On December 21st, YouTuber[8] Artzipants uploaded an original animation featuring the sound, garnering over 7,000 views in two months (shown below).

In early 2021, the sound saw a small resurgence on TikTok as multiple new videos using the sound went viral. On February 8th, 2021, TikToker[9] @thatdoggosarge uploaded a video of their cat set to the sound, garnering over 1.2 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). On February 9th, TikToker[10] @_morgan.whitley_ uploaded a video of her cat brandishing its claws using the sound, garnering over 5.1 million views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).
