Mrs. Puff In a Padded Room is an exploitable reaction image meme format based on a scene from the 2002 SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Doing Time," in which Mrs. Puff is shown sitting in the middle of a yellow padded room in a straitjacket, the walls of which turn into SpongeBob's face.

A screenshot of Mrs. Puff in the padded room first became the subject of memes in June 2020 on X / Twitter. It then grew as an increasingly popular meme throughout the 2020s. Some of the most viral memes are reaction images where the walls have been edited to show a person's face. These memes use Mrs. Puff to represent someone obsessed with the subject on the walls.

Early examples of the meme crossover with the Being Too Honest With Your Therapist memes. Notably, the Mrs. Puff meme comes from the same episode as the SpongeBob Boiling In a Pot meme format.

Origin

On January 21st, 2002, the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Doing Time" aired on TV.

In the episode, Mrs. Puff is sent to jail for gross negligence, despite SpongeBob being responsible for the incident that got her jail time. SpongeBob and Patrick try to break her out. They make things worse and land Mrs. Puff in solitary confinement in a straitjacket, depicted as a room with padded walls. Mrs. Puff is relieved that at least she's away from SpongeBob and Patrick, but can't get SpongeBob out of her head. His face appears on all the walls as she goes insane.

One of the earliest known examples of the scene as a meme was posted by X^[1] / Twitter user @mutelettuce on June 28th, 2020. The meme reads, "my therapist: where do you see yourself in 5 years? me:," using Mrs. Puff to represent themselves going insane. The post gained about 30 likes in six years.

It was converted into an image macro and posted to the /r/memes^[2] subreddit on November 30th, 2020, garnering over 17,000 upvotes in six years.

Images of Mrs. Puff in the padded room continued to inspire memes throughout the 2020s as the format grew online.

On October 14th, 2022, X^[3] user @97Vercetti posted a version of the Being Too Honest With Your Therapist meme that uses the image, garnering over 157,000 likes in four years.

The meme was recreated and reposted many times over the following years on sites like X.^[4][5]

On December 15th, 2023, X^[6] user @Wheeema posted a slightly different version of the meme about opening up too much to their therapist, gaining over 8,700 likes in three years.

On August 16th, 2024, Redditor anxious_honey_bee posted a screenshot to the /r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2^[7] subreddit of a now-deleted tweet in which the meme is being used to criticize people for being transphobic and hateful regarding the Imane Khelif controversy, garnering over 2,400 upvotes in two years.

On August 18th, 2026, X^[8] user @PunishedPingu posted a version of the meme where the walls are replaced with leftist political streamer Hasan Piker's face, criticizing congressman Jared Moskowitz for making a tweet calling Piker out after winning the Florida primary, garnering over 1,400 likes in a day.
