My Body Is a Machine That Turns X Into Y is a phrasal template meme usually combined with an image of a skeleton squatting a 200KG weight. The format first gained popularity in 2021, achieving wider presence on social media in 2023.
Origin
The image of a skeleton squatting a 200 kilogram weight, originally captioned "Death Squat," was created by artist Jim S. some time in 2010 (shown below). On March 11th, 2012, WordPress[1] user Doctor Lynn used the image to illustrate their blog post.
On January 14th, 2021, Redditor Aeserius captioned the image, "My body is a machine that turns ice cream into diarrhea." The post gained over 680 upvotes in the /r/THE_PACK subreddit[2] in two years (shown below).
Spread
In the following days, the meme received viral spread online through reposts. On January 14th, 2021, iFunny[3] user Yanklin reposted the image, with the post being featured and garnering over 38,100 smiles in two years. On January 16th, Redditor LemonLarryLP posted the image in the /r/dankmemes[4] subreddit, where it gained over 10,200 upvotes prior to being removed.
On November 2nd, 2021, iFunny[5] user Aegidivs posted the earliest found recaptioned version of the meme. The post (shown below, left) gained over 1,700 smiles in one year. On November 24th, Instagram[6] user the.dead.man.walking posted a version that gained over 430 likes in the same period (shown below, right).
The format saw continued spread online through 2022. For example, on May 7th, 2022, Memedroid[7] user French_Eater posted a version that gained over 540 likes on the site in one year (shown below, left; authorship unconfirmed). On November 4th, 2022, Twitter[8] gimmick account @shirtsthtgohard posted a T-shirt with a version of the meme. The tweet received over 14,300 retweets and 152,000 likes in three months (shown below, right).
The format maintained its popularity online in early 2023, with several versions of the meme going viral during that period.
