My Life Is Potato is a phrase spoken by a young Maltese potato farmer in the 2013 promotional film "Malta Potatoes," by the Dutch vegetable distributor Jansen-Dongen.^[3] The phrase, and several more from the same video, have become popular in Vine and YouTube remixes.

Origin

On March 21st, 2013, the Dutch vegetable distributor Jansen-Dongen released a video^[2] entitled "Malta Potatoes" which advertised the sources of their potatoes. The company said that the video was often used at conferences and other promotional opportunities where it was not always possible to view it with sound, hence the subtitles. The interview with the young farmer occurs at about 2:15 in the video. Since its posting, the original video has accrued over 321,000 views as of September 2015. A video with corrected subtitles, posted several months later, has accrued an additional 20,000 views.

The first remixes began to appear in early May of 2013, after the original video began to receive a lot of views, most likely from a post on Reddit.^[4] "Malta Potatoes (Enteroar Potato Blood Remix)" was posted by user TYVM (FORMERLY ENTEROAR/CAT TRVP) on May 2nd, 2013, and has received more than 59,000 views as of September 2015 (below left). On May 31st, 2013, YouTube user Rydhorn posted the video "My life is potato [ORIGINAL EDIT]", which edited the young farmer's lines together without the rest of the promotional video (below right). This edit received over 1,047,000 views as of September 2015. In addition, this edit was posted to the subreddit /r/videos on March 16th, 2014, where it received 678 points (89% upvoted).^[10] A search for "My Life is Potato Remix" returns 38,500 results on YouTube, and the hashtag #mylifeispotato has been used at least 15 times on Vine and 442 times on Instagram.^[5][1][6] There are three separate pages called My Life Is Potato on Facebook; one has over 3,400 fans, one with over 1,700 fans, and one with over 1,300 fans.^[7][8][9]
