Nescoffee is a series of brainrot memes based on a scene from the 2012 Bollywood film English Vinglish in which actress Sridevi, playing Shashi Godbole, asks for Nescafé (a type of instant coffee) at a coffee shop and the worker misunderstands her poor pronunciation, believing she said "nice coffee." The clip began going viral and inspiring memes on TikTok in mid-April 2026, becoming increasingly popularized in early May, inspiring animation, recreations and lip-dub memes as well. Some found the meme tasteless and offensive, seeing it as a way of making fun of the actress after her death. Others argued that the meme makes fun of the character, not the actress.

Origin

In 2012, the Indian film English Vinglish was released. The movie stars actress Sridevi, who plays Shashi Godbole, an Indian woman who goes for English lessons to stop her husband and daughter from making fun of her for her poor grasp of the English language.

In one scene, she tries to order in English from a coffee shop, but struggles every step of the way as the worker gets frustrated with her. When trying to order a Nescafé coffee, the worker thinks she says, "Nice coffee." The scene was uploaded by the Eros Universe YouTube^[1] channel on November 3rd, 2012, gaining over 4.3 million views in 14 years.

In 2018, Sridevi notably died of accidental drowning.^[2]

On April 16th, 2026, TikToker^[3] @mynt333 posted a brainrot edit based around the clip, gaining over 693,000 views in about a month.

The Nescoffee clip continued to spread throughout April and May 2026, inspiring a variety of memes. It also inspired some reaction images that became prevalent in the comment sections of videos related to the meme, including a black-and-white Mustard Analog Horror-style meme.

On May 1st, 2026, TikToker^[4] @city_boyyy2 posted a video referencing the Nescoffee memes, garnering over 591,000 views in three days.

On May 2nd, TikToker^[5] @_ensar_.4 posted a video shaming people for making fun of the actress with the meme, a common sentiment shared in the comments of Nescoffee memes, garnering over 1.9 million views in two days. Some of the top comments argue against this, claiming that they're making fun of the character, not the actress.

That day, TikToker^[6] @aceplays123101 posted a video that recreates the scene using Roblox characters, garnering over 569,000 views in two days.
