Nolan Winking's Cappy Audition is a viral video in which content creator Nolan Winking unofficially auditions for the role of Cappy, a sentient hat in the video game Super Mario Odyssey, for the Super Mario Odyssey movie, which has not been announced or confirmed to be the sequel to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The audition video was uploaded to Instagram in April 2026. It became the subject of memes on TikTok and Instagram Reels in September 2026, including brainrot edits that alter the clip in a variety of absurd ways. A remixed audio of Winking making Cappy noises also became the subject of dance and lip dub videos. Winking responded positively to the memes that month.

Origin

On April 25th, 2026, content creator Nolan Winking posted a video on Instagram^[1] that gained over 144,000 likes in five months. The video is an unofficial audition tape for the role of Cappy, a sentient hat, in the Super Mario Odyssey movie, which has not been announced as the next Super Mario movie. Winking explains that he previously posted videos auditioning for the role of Yoshi in both Super Mario movies, but did not get the role. Winking proceeds to make several sound effects reminiscent of those heard from Cappy in the Super Mario Odyssey video game.

On August 30th, 2026, TikToker^[2] @tanak.v2 posted a video where he reacts to Winking's audition with laughter, insisting he wholeheartedly supports Winking for the role and saying he can't tell if Winking is trolling or not. He then does an audition for the role of the gold coin in the Mario Odyssey movie. The video gained over 2.2 million views in three weeks.

On September 8th, 2026, TikToker^[3] @dublxml posted a brainrot edit of the video that gained over 2.7 million views in two weeks.

On September 9th, TikToker^[4] @idkally_official posted a similar brainrot edit of the video that gained over 950,000 views in two weeks.

On September 15th, TikToker^[5] @yuno_cc posted an edit of the video that compares Winking to "sub-5" voice actors, meaning inferior voice actors, garnering over 3 million views in a week.

That day, Instagram^[6] user livedwater_real posted a video parodying Winking's video, in which he auditions for Cappy, garnering over 49,000 likes in a week.

On September 16th, Winking uploaded a comedy skit to Instagram^[7] where he addresses becoming a meme, gaining over 17,000 likes in six days.

Dance / Lip Dub Trend

On September 15th, 2026, TikToker^[8] @bah7uz posted an edit of the Cappy audition video that remixes the audio of Winking's Cappy noises with a beat, gaining over 3 million views in a week.

The audio became the subject of a split-screen lip dub and dance trend, in which participants lip dub to the sounds while dancing in a split-screen. For example, on September 19th, TikToker^[9] @spidernutss posted a video doing the trend that gained over 1.1 million views in three days.
