In early September 2025, claims that Nintendo had renewed a trademark relating to Super Mario Galaxy started spreading online. For example, on September 8th, 2025, X^[1] user @Stealth40k shared this claim, garnering over 5,000 likes in four days. The story originated from X user @necrolipe.

On September 11th, X^[2] user @Wario64 shared another claim by @necrolipe claiming that NBC Universal registered the website domain "supermariogalaxy.movie" on September 3rd, garneirng over 5,000 likes in a day.

Announcement

On September 12th, 2025, the Nintendo of America YouTube^[3] channel streamed a Nintendo Direct event. During the event, in celebration of Super Mario's 40th anniversary, the first announcement was for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel t 2023's animated The Super Mario Movie. A release date of April 3rd, 2026 was revealed, along with confirmation that main voice cast from the first film is returning. Along with this, a re-release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 was also announced during the event.

The film's isolated teaser was uploaded to the Nintendo of America YouTube^[4] channel shortly after the stream, garnering over 100,000 views in about two hours.

On September 11th, 2025, as the rumors of the movie's existence spread, people began reacting to the idea of a movie based on Super Mario Galaxy.

On September 11th, X^[5] user @misterduby posted, "Isn’t a bit early to go straight to Galaxy? Feels like the kind of thing you do for the third movie," garnering over 7,700 likes in a day. On the same day, X^[6] user @Getlucky12341 made a post theorizing about aspects of the movie, garnering over 15,000 likes in a day.

Post-Announcement Reactions

The movie's announcement inspired further reactions.
