An audio clip of the phrase became the subject of video edits and memes on YouTube and TikTok in 2020 due to its absurdity and the cadence in which its narrated, bearing similarity to Top15's Burger King Foot Lettuce meme.

On April 20th, 2018, YouTuber They Will Kill You uploaded "7 Strangest Things That Happened on an Airplane" to their YouTube[1] channel, a list-style video that details different instances of strange things happening on planes (shown below). At the 1:38 mark in the video, They Will Kill You says the titular line to introduce the entry and goes on to detail a story from 2016 about a shirtless Algerian man fighting with and urinating on another passenger during a flight to Paris.[2] The video gained over 292,000 views in 2 years.

On March 16th, 2020, NUMB NUTS uploaded a clip from They Will Kill You's video of him reading the entry title to YouTube,[3] garnering over 75,000 views in 9 months. On November 16th, TikToker painchampagne uploaded a video to TikTok[4] in which he lip-syncs to the narration while on a plane and using the Face Stretch filter, garnering over 1.5 million views in 3 weeks (shown below, left). Shortly after, other TikTokers began using the original sound, often coupled with the Face Stretch filter and a heightened framerate or loosely related footage, for their own absurd lip-sync videos. On November 25th, im.camren uploaded a video to TikTok[5] where he lip-syncs to the sound in an exaggerated way while sweating and shirtless, garnering over 1.1 million views in just under 2 weeks (shown below, right).

The meme also saw popularity on YouTube, with users attaching the narration to various clips to create absurd videos and make it appear as if someone else is saying the phrase. On November 26th, Anya The Nobody uploaded a video[6] using the audio clip over Hotel Transylvania footage, garnering over 58,000 views in just under 2 weeks (shown below, left). On December 5th, Saint Dabbers uploaded a video to YouTube[7] using the audio clip, garnering over 1,700 views in 2 days (shown below, right).



As of December 8th, painchampagne's original sound has been used in over 14,000 videos on TikTok (additional examples shown below, left and right).[8][9]
